Donald Trump, the United States presidential candidate for the Republican party, in his quest to win the votes of African–Americans, directed the question “What do you have to lose?” to the African–American populace.
Speaking at a rally in Dimondale, Michigan, on Friday, August 19, with a mostly white audience of voters, Trump criticized his Democratic counterpart, Hillary Clinton, he said “no group in America has been more harmed by Hillary Clinton’s policies than African–Americans, if Hillary Clinton’s goal was to inflict pain on the African–American community she could not have done a better job”.
Trump urged African–Americans to desist from voting for Democrats as they will always get the same result as before. He said African–American communities have suffered more under democratic rule, and cited that 52% of young African–Americans are jobless and the community lives in poverty. The New York business man asked “What do you have to lose by trying something new, like Trump”?
Hillary Clinton took to her Twitter page to respond to Mr. Trump’s speech. The former secretary of state tweeted “This is so ignorant it’s staggering”.
One cannot ascertain the impact of Donald Trump’s message; as recent polls show that 1% of African–American voters might vote for Trump.
