In the wake of the Dallas police attack a gunman has killed three Baton Rouge, Louisiana police officers and injured three at about 9 a.m. (10 a.m. ET). The police officers were attacked while responding to a 911 call. The 911 operator had received a call about a suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an “assault rifle”. The suspect was wearing all black and a mask. The suspect has been identified as one Gavin Long who was shot dead at the scene of the incident. The motive of the 29-year-old shooter is still unclear as law enforcement agencies believe that two other suspects may be at large.

President Barack Obama in a statement condemned the attack, he said “for the second time in two weeks, police officers who put their lives on the line for ours every day were doing their job when they were killed in a cowardly and reprehensible assault, these are attacks on public servants, on the rule of law, and on civilized society, and they have to stop. These attacks are the work of cowards who speak for no one. They right no wrongs. They advance no causes.”

Also in a press briefing the president said “nothing justifies violence against the police”, he added “this has happened far too often”, he urged Americans to focus on uniting and not dividing.

Investigators wonder if the 911 call was genuine or was used to lure and ambush the officers.

“This is an unspeakable and unjustified attack on all of us at a time when we need unity and healing,” said the Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.
