PDP in Tug of War

imageSupporters of the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee and that of Senator Ali-Modu Sheriff clashed at the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as both groups continue to lay siege at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

Armed with sticks and clubs, the protesters blocked the entrance of the Wadata Plaza, the complex housing the party’s secretariat.

Trouble began when supporters of Senator Ali-Modu Sheriff attempted to dislodge their counterparts supporting the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee who were already laying siege at the gate of the secretariat.

Meanwhile, neither Senator Ahmed Makarfi, nor his rival, Senator Ali-Modu Sheriff, who the backers claimed to be supporting showed up at the party’s secretariat.

Ali Modu Sheriff (pictured first) was Borno State‘s first governor to serve two consecutive terms. He currently is the National Chairman of the PDP. He is considered by political analysts in Nigeria as a factional leader. His relation to Senator Ahmed Makarfi (pictured second) is not only party ties, but his recent declaration (Monday) that Edo State conducted governorship primaries that were illegal in nature, he also had harsh words for Makarfi alleged creation of his own Caretaker Committee, in Sheriff’s own words “illegal and a contraption of an illegal Caretaker Committee.”
