A Gombe secondary school student in Nigeria has been shot dead allegedly by a police officer after a testy secondary school football match ended in a free for all, witnesses and family members of the victim have said.
An inter school football competition at the Pantami township stadium in Gombe between the Government Day Secondary Pilot and Science schools ended in a clash between supporters of the two teams.
The game master of the Government Day School, Ishiyaku Kaleb, said fighting started after the match ended 1 – 0 against his school.
He said the student, identified only as Yunusa, was shot dead after the students started throwing rocks, with at least one projectile hitting the unnamed officer.
Sani Madi, the older brother of the victim, said the family would take legal action if the school failed to act over the killing.
Police spokesperson Fwaje Atajiri, confirmed the killing, but said investigations were ongoing to establish who shot the student.
