Reigning Nigerian Glo Premier League champions, Enyimba FC will be aiming at winning the Super Cup as the team confront FA Cup champions, Akwa United FC at the Abuja National Stadium, on Wednesday.

Popularly known as the Charity Shield in England to welcome the new football season, both teams will be hoping to hit their campaign on a winning note in a bid to boost the morale of their players.

This encounter holds more honor and prestige than one might think of a charity match. As the rivals fully realize that a winner must emerge after 90 minutes or better and a penalty could determine the fate of both teams.

Akwa United are brimming with immense confidence following a run of marvelous results, including beating the better–fancied Lobi Stars to win the Federation Cup and conquering fellow continental campaigners (Enyimba FC, Warri Wolves and Nasarawa) in two rounds of the Super Four organized by the League Management Company.

On Saturday, the boys from the Land of Promise boldly promised more, by beating more experienced Vita Club Mokanda of Congo 1 – 0 in Pointe Noire in a CAF Confederation Cup first round, first leg match.

On the other side, Enyimba lost 1 – 0 to Uganda’s Vipers away in the first leg of the CAF Championship, with the return leg scheduled for a fortnight in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Akwa United will be banking on the experience of Charles Omokaro, Femi Thomas, Lucky Nosa and Chibuzor Ozurumba to help the team ease past Enyimba. While Enyimba’s quest for a trophy will be shouldered by the trio of Ezekiel Bassey, Mfon Udoh and Bernard Okorowanta.
