The year 2015 started on a good note although with mixed reactions of what occurred for the nation [Nigeria] in the previous year. NigerianReporter.com, has gathered a list of famous Nollywood actors who were laid to rest 2015. May their souls rest in peace.
Most famous for: Muna Obiekwe was one of the most versatile and talented actors in the movie industry before he passed away in Lagos, Nigeria. Arguably his most popular and controversial role was in the drama Men in Love dating back to 2010 where he played a gay man. The film was harshly criticized as many alleged that it was popularizing the ideas of homosexuality in Nigeria.
Cause of Death: Obiekwe was reported to have died from kidney failure that was not properly taken care of due to lack of funds, he did not want to seek outside aid. Reports said the actor who was based in Enugu, had been suffering from kidney complications for some time but kept it a secret from his friends and colleagues. He is survived by his wife and children.
Gone too soon: Obiekwe died only 17 days after the 1st of January 2015 and was born in 1979, which gives you some perspective on a bright light that was dimmed too early.
Dede One Day
Most famous for: Dede One Day wore many professional hats as musician, actor, presenter and anchor, but he is most famous for his role as a comedian. His facebook page still reads, “A comedian with an extra joke, laugh with me.”
Cause of Death: According to The Nation news report, he anchored a program for Charles Esonu in Abia State. He left for another event in Ugwunagbo, where he was contracted to anchor, but he couldn’t conclude the event. He was rushed to the hospital due to blood pressure issues and died later that night. He passed on December 14, 2015.
Gone too Soon: He was considered a king of comedy, who put smiles on everyone’s face, he died in his 40’s. His death came as a shock to the nation, especially since he was so young.
Mufutau Sanni a.k.a Ajigijaga
Most famous for: Mufutau Sanni is popular for his prominent roles in 1990’s films. His role was usually as leader or “boss man” in crime activities. The “Godfather” of the Nigerian silverscreen. He was also a popular comedian.
Cause of Death: Ajigijaga died Friday, July 31, 2015, at his residence in Agege, Lagos following injuries he sustained from an accident he was involved in previous weeks back. The thespian Ajigijaga died at the age of 60.
Gone to soon: A tragic death through a car accident leaves us missing Sanni who was also a member of the Actors Guild in Nigeria.
Most famous for: Peter Bunor was one of Nigeria’s greatest actors of all time. His career spans over 30 years and he was a prominent face in soap operas before his Nollywood debut.
Cause of death: He passed away on May 2, 2015 after battling with the complications of a stroke for several years. Before he died, Peter had complained for years, accusing his colleagues of abandoning him after he fell ill. He said to the Vanguard in 2013, “since this thing happened there has been no single actor that called me to ask about my condition. It is a shame on their part. Would they say they don’t know that I am sick? I had a stroke and that was the end of it”.
Gone to soon: He was laid to rest in the company of family, friends and colleagues in the movie industry on May 30, 2015. He died at age 60 like his counterpart Mufutau Sanni. His son described his passing to Naij.com as “a painful loss, but perhaps he deserved to go and rest.”
Most famous for: Ozor Akubueze was a veteran in the Nigerian movie industry. The gifted actor played the “elder” role in many of his films.
Cause of Death: He died on Friday, July 10, 2015, in Lagos, after a long battle with Pancreas disease. It has been learned that Akubueze, who featured in several Nollywood movies shot in Enugu, last underwent surgery in 2014 with his medical bills covered by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
Gone too soon: Reports revealed that the Septuagenarian died while he was among family and friends.
Fashola Funsho Ogunremi a.ka Inspector Skede
Most famous for: Ogunremi is well known for playing the role of a police officer thus the stage name Inspector Skede. He was also a film producer.
Cause of Death: He was reported to have died in his sleep in his home in Lagos, Nigeria. Nollywood’s beloved thespian was battling two diseases simultaneously; congestive cardiac failure and diabetes.
Gone too soon: The ailments which later claimed his life were said to have began four years prior to his passing and he was alleged to have resulted to self-medication when he could not afford hospital bills. Before his death, attempts were made by his colleagues in the Yoruba movie genre of Nollywood to raise N2.5m for him to get appropriate medical care. The age of his death is not known to have been reported.
