The Nigeria under 23 team swept the match with a victory over the Terenga Lions of Senegal 1-0 in the ongoing U-23 Championship, on Wednesday.
The expectations of many Africans was that Nigeria would lose against Senegal following the fact that most of Nigeria’s prominent players had sustained injuries from their previous matches. Moreover, the Senegalese had been enjoying a flawless record from the group stage, which may have been as a result of their home advantage.
Nigerian Coach, Samson Siasia, was massively appreciated by the Nigerians due to the brilliant substitutes he made to curb the leakages in the team formation.
It was observed that the Terenga Lions gained more ball possession and chances to score goals, but this was frustrated by the actions of the Nigerian goalkeeper; Emmanuel Daniel, who made brilliant saves like denying Senegalese striker Ibrahima Keïta in a one-on-one situation in the first half.
The Flying Eagles’ Etebo Oghenekaro’s strike in the 76th minute was the game changer that sealed the deal for Rio.
Reacting to the pleasant victory secured by the U-23 Nigeria team, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalong expressed the Federal government’s full support in the subsequent final match of the African Championship, and ahead of the Olympics coming up in Brazil.
