Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could not help Borussia Dortmund cruise past Bayern Munich as the team lost 4-3 on penalties in the final of the German Cup played at the magnificent Olympiastadion Berlin on Saturday.
Having not won the trophy since joining the team in 2013, Aubameyang, who has been the brain behind their qualification to the final thanks to his goals, was expected to clinch the cup for the first time. However, with the game goalless after 90 minutes and extra time, the destiny of both teams was decided on penalties, of which the Bavarians came out victorious.
Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Buerki saved Joshua Kimmich’s penalty but Thomas Mueller kept Bayern in control, and Douglas Costa scored the decisive spot kick.
Dortmund are now without a major trophy for four seasons. They have lost three consecutive Pokal finals, the 2013 Champions League final and finished runners-up in the Bundesliga three times in the last four years.
The victory ensures Bayern win a record 18th Pokal trophy as Guardiola finishes his three years in charge with an impressive double prior to joining Manchester City.
