Nigeria’s Flying Eagles took a bold step to qualifying for next year’s African U-20 Nations Cup slated for Zambia as the team piped the Burundi’s U-20 side 1-0 in far away Bujumbura on Saturday.
Both teams began the game on a cautious note and had a slight opportunity of breaking the deadlock.
The reigning African Champions who will be hoping to defend their trophy in Zambia could have taken the lead in the 35th minute but Victor Osimhen’s low shot went wide the goal post.
With little chances created in the first half thanks to the solid defending of both teams, the second half took another dimension as Burundi’s U-20 side attacked the visiting team but had no fruitful result to show for it.
However, the Flying Eagles scored the crucial away goal in the 76th minute to silence the home crowd who had come to cheer their darling team.
The victory puts the Nigerian side in pole position of qualifying to the next round as the reverse fixture will be played in a fortnight.
