Nigerian Premier League: Ikorodu United, MFM Set For Lagos Derby

Ikorodu United

The city of Lagos will literally be shutdown on Saturday as newly promoted Ikorodu United and Mountain of Fire Ministry FC (MFM) will lock horns at the 5,000 capacity Onikan Stadium on Saturday in the Nigerian Premier League in what has been tagged as the Lagos derby.

Just like what is attained in Europe where you have the Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid; Milan derby between AC Milan and Inter Milan; London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal; Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City and finally the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton.

The Lagos derby was once the most anticipated matches in the days of teams like Stationary Stores FC, Julius Berger FC, NEPA and First Bank.

Both teams have shown signs of remaining at the élite division of the league with some fantastic football and results against top teams in the league such as Lobi Stars, Abia Warriors and Sunshine Stars.

The hosts have won two and lost one of their three matches in this ongoing season, with the most recent defeat against Enyimba FC in Aba (1 – 0) on Thursday.

On the other hand, second place MFM have garnered nine points, winning three against one match lost in their last four matches in the league.

Interestingly, the team shocked most football pundits when they defeated Nasarawa FC 2 – 1 at the Aper Aku Stadium in their first league fixture.

On paper, the two teams have equal chances of picking up the maximum points if they convert the goal scoring chances that come their way.
