Dubbed the Boko Haram anti-terrorism campaign, the UK is increasing their involvement in politics and counter-terrorism affairs in Nigeria in order to counteract the devastation that Boko Haram has had on the Nigerian society and neighboring border countries of Cameroon, Niger, and Chad.
Boko Haram has destroyed villages and killed residents. An estimated 20,000 have been killed. More than 2 million have been displaced, according to U.N. figures.
Since 2009, when the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram launched military operations to overthrow the Nigerian government and create an Islamic state in the country’s northeast, 45,000 people have been abducted and 7.5 million people need humanitarian aid to survive.
