Muhammadu Buhari is the President of Nigeria, officially inaugurated since May 2015. He is a retired Nigerian Army major-general and was Head of State for Nigeria from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état.
It would seem as if President Buhari whose birthday was on Thursday, December 17, would want the public to believe he is still 72 years old, although he took office at the same age.
Adding controversy to the confusion over his age, former president Olusegun Obansanjo tweeted a happy birthday to the president, writing “I felicitate with @MBuhari on his 78th birthday, I wish him more years of good health and the wisdom to steer Nigeria to greater heights”, on December 15th. The tweet was later deleted.
Is Obasanjo telling us that Buhari is lying about his real age?
Although many news publications and online sources confirm his age at 73 after last week’s birthday festivities, many wonder. This doesn’t aid speculation over the president’s ability to lead, as some feel he may be “too old” to take on the presidency.
