After a long wait for the final result from the Bayelsa governorship election conducted on the 5th of December 2015, a new election date has been confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
INEC spokesperson, Nick Dazang said “the 9th of January 2016 was the perfect date set up by the body for the conclusion of the election of the south Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, after holding several meetings to create a peaceful and justice-able atmosphere for the rerun process”.
The election in Ijaw was declared inconclusive due to political unrest during the election, snatching of ballot boxes and keeping the INEC officials hostage.
The new date for voting will include thorough monitoring by INEC and other agencies that need to be involved such as security agencies, under the provision of the law.
Dazang also confirmed that the INEC has issued a public notice concerning the date.
