Nigeria’s U23 team failed to secure a win against Egypt, with the match ending 2 – 2. This is after their close win against the Mali national team just three days ago, on Sunday night. They managed a victory of 3 – 2 against Mali, but were not so lucky on Wednesday.
The U23 Flying Eagles, dubbed the Dream Team IV, were unnerved by the Young Pharaohs.
Nigeria last won the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON title in 2013, and are hungry for a comeback.
At half-time the score on the pitch stood at Nigeria 2 – 0 Egypt, with two penalty kicks shot in by Oghenekaro Etebo being the deciding factor between the teams. However, Egypt managed to equalize, and Nigeria could not get a goal for the win despite their efforts.
The loss does not count the U23 team completely out of competition as between the two matches, they gained enough points to be possible contenders in the semi-finals.
According to Premium Times Nigeria, the ongoing Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Senegal also doubles as the Olympic Qualifiers.
The top three from this tournament get an automatic ticket to represent Africa at the 2016 Rio Olympics Men’s Football event.
